Chicago P.D.’s Sergeant Hank Voight has maintained a hard stance on interoffice romances — but actor Jason Beghe said he’s made an exception for Kim Burgess and Adam Ruzek.
“[Voight] accepts it and supports it, and [he does] love them both, but it is a potential problem,” Beghe, 65, exclusively told Us Weekly ahead of the Chicago P.D. season 13 premiere this month, noting that his character does have some mixed feelings about Burgess (Marina Squerciati) and Ruzek (Patrick Flueger) working together now that they are married.
Beghe noted that although it is Voight’s “reality now” that two of his team members live together, as their boss he has to “be aware of how [to] delegate responsibilities to prevent them as best [he] can from overlapping.”
The actor confessed that having to factor in Burgess and Ruzek’s relationship status to case assignments won’t be easy this season.

“It can lead to bad decisions and mistakes, but it is what it is,” Beghe teased. “So [he’ll] support them and fight for them — give his last drop of blood to protect them. They’re a family now – that includes [their daughter] Makayla. She’s [Voight’s] family.”
Burgess and Ruzek got engaged three times before they successfully made it down the aisle during the season 12 finale in May.

“I’m walking down the aisle and I give Voight this, like, beaming smile and he just kind of nods at me and I’m like, ‘OK, on brand,’” Squerciati, 41, exclusively told Us in May of one of the sweeter moments from the nuptials.
While Beghe teased that the Intelligence Team will be affected at times of Burgess and Ruzek’s marital status, Chicago P.D. showrunner Gwen Sigan told Us in May that season 13 will be more “wholesome” for the couple.
“Now that they have some sort of stability at home, what does it look like on the job?” Sigan mused. “What can we push them into and sort of, find stories there.”

She noted that the writer’s room is “excited” for the married couple’s story lines, adding there’s “a lot to play” with for the pair.
Outside of Burgess and Ruzek’s relationship highs and lows, season 13 will focus on rebuilding for Intelligence. During the season 12 finale, Deputy Chief Charlie Reid (Shawn Hatosy) was killed shortly before Voight was set to speak with the higher ups about his team and their alleged past misconduct.

During the season 13 premiere, which aired on October 1, Voight’s crew was still disbanded but by the end of the episode, he had worked his magic — with a little bit of blackmail — to get them reinstated.
“Voight isn’t a guy who lives in the past. He’s very much in the present. So, he might have made a mistake, but it is what it is,” Beghe told Us last month of his character’s mindset this season. “Now, what do you do? He understands that life happens. Sometimes it’s good, sometimes it’s bad.”
Sigan, meanwhile, teased in May that the new episodes make it clear that Voight getting his team cleared “wasn’t just easy clean, we’re done, bow tied” and now they are good. She noted there will now be a “different dynamic” for the unit moving forward.
Chicago P.D. airs on NBC Wednesdays at 10 p.m. ET.
