Liverpool’s strong start to the season has come to an emphatic end after defeats in the Premier League and Champions League in recent days. Arne Slot’s side will be looking to bounce back at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

Chelsea’s recent form has also been patchy, but they were victorious in midweek. Who comes out on top in west London?

Chelsea vs Liverpool predictions

Just as back-to-back victories can lift clouds of gloom, optimism can easily be punctured by two defeats on the bounce.

Just ask Liverpool. Last Friday they were flying high having won each of their seven matches across the Premier League, Champions League and EFL Cup. Since then they have been brought back down to earth.

First Liverpool lost 2-1 to Crystal Palace in the league on Saturday, allowing Arsenal to close the gap at the top of the table to three points. Then they suffered defeat by Galatasaray on Tuesday in their second Champions League outing of the season.

Arne Slot admitted that his team deserved to lose to Palace. Liverpool were outplayed in the first half, and although they got back in the game after the break, Eddie Nketiah’s last-gasp strike brought Palace all three points.

There was only one goal in the loss to Galatasaray, scored by Victor Osimhen from the penalty spot in the 16th minute.

Liverpool were vulnerable defensively in Istanbul, as they have consistently been over the last few weeks. They also failed to make the most of the promising attacking situations they found themselves in, allowing Galatasaray to shut them out.

Slot left Mohamed Salah on the bench until shortly after the hour mark. That was a gamble and it did not pay off, although it must be said that the Egypt international has not had a particularly good start to the season.

Florian Wirtz was quiet again, with the former Bayer Leverkusen man still struggling to adjust to his new surroundings, while Ibrahima Konate’s poor form shows no signs of abating.

Slot tried to put a positive spin on his team’s showing after the match, but deep down he will be concerned.

“For me it was a different loss to the one we had against Palace because for me there was a lot more to like,” he said.

Liverpool have yet to find the right balance between attack and defence thus far, and they have not yet been as coherent as they were last season.

A triumph over Chelsea this weekend would be timely, but the Blues are also desperate for the points after a three-match winless streak in the league.

Enzo Maresca’s men at least came out on top on matchday two of the Champions League, beating Benfica 1-0 as Jose Mourinho returned to Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea vs Liverpool betting tips

Chelsea and Liverpool will renew hostilities at Stamford Bridge in the late kick-off on Saturday.

Draw represents good value

Chelsea may have lost their last two Premier League games, but that was in large part because they had a player sent off against both Manchester United and Brighton & Hove Albion.

If the Blues can keep 11 players on the field for the duration of this encounter, they have a good chance of getting something.

Even in winning their first five top-flight tussles of 2025/26, Liverpool did not deliver flawless performances.

Their shortcomings were exploited by Crystal Palace and Galatasaray, and Chelsea should be able to cause them problems too.

At the same time, Liverpool have enough firepower in attacking areas to avoid defeat at Stamford Bridge. The draw is good value.

Goals await at the Bridge

It is fair to say that neither Chelsea nor Liverpool has looked convincing defensively over the last few weeks.

The Blues have made countless individual errors leading to opposition chances or goals, including the recent red cards for Robert Sanchez and Trevoh Chalobah.

Liverpool’s issues are more structural. The team has arguably become too top-heavy after considerable investment in attack over the summer. That is compounded by the aforementioned Konate not being at the races.

Chelsea and Liverpool are both better going forward than they are at the back, so this should be an entertaining watch for neutrals.

Pick Pedro for goalscorer

Yet another red card struck Chelsea in midweek, as Joao Pedro was given his marching orders against Benfica right before the final whistle.

Pedro’s suspension only applies to European games, though, so he should be in the starting XI against Liverpool.

Whether he plays at centre-forward or in his preferred second striker role, the Brazil international will be one of Chelsea’s principal threats.

Pedro has scored two goals in the Premier League this season and it is worth tipping him to notch a third on Saturday.
