If you’ve ever owned an Audi or Volkswagen and dealt with a pricey turbocharger repair, you may be in for some good news. A new class action settlement could mean cash back or extended warranties for thousands of drivers across the U.S. and Puerto Rico. And yes, it’s absolutely worth checking if your car makes the list.

Cars the Settlement Covers

The case, Kimball v. Volkswagen Group of America, centered around claims that certain VW and Audi models were fitted with turbochargers that were prone to failing early, often due to corrosion in the wastegate. These defective turbos were attached to the first three generations of the EA888 engine. Fortunately, it seems the latest generation EA888 found in cars like the 2025 Volkswagen Golf GTI isn't affected.

How Much Money Are We Talking About?

For drivers who already paid for a turbo repair, reimbursement is on the table. Eligible owners can get between 40% and 50% of their costs back for one turbocharger repair, capped at $3,850 if it wasn’t done at an authorized dealer. If you had the work done at a VW or Audi dealership, you’re in a stronger position to get the higher 50% reimbursement. Even if you haven’t shelled out for a repair, there’s still something in it for you. Effective September 15, 2025, warranty extensions kick in for certain “Generation 3” vehicles. That means coverage of 50% of parts and labor for turbocharger fixes, up to 8.5 years or 85,000 miles from the car’s in-service date.

To get reimbursed, you’ll need to file a claim by clicking here by November 29, 2025. Along with the claim form, make sure to provide:

  • Your name
  • Vehicle make, model, and VIN
  • The name and address of the VW/Audi dealer or service center
  • The date of the repair
  • Mileage at the time of repair
  • A description of the work performed, with parts and labor breakdown
  • The total amount charged
  • Proof of payment (invoice marked “Paid”)

If the repair was done by a non-authorized shop, you may also need a signed declaration from the facility confirming payment. A final approval hearing is scheduled for December 4, 2025. If approved, that refund check or warranty coverage could be just around the corner.
