Derby v Bristol City predictions
Bristol City make the trip to the East Midlands as favourites for victory on Friday night having won two and drawn one of their opening three matches in all competitions this season.
The Robins have taken to life well under new manager Gerhard Struber following Liam Manning’s departure to Norwich, gaining multiple headlines in winning 4-1 away from home against a much fancied Sheffield United side on the opening day of the season.
Only three months prior, the West Country side had fallen to a record play-off semi final defeat to the same opposition, losing 3-0 in both legs, showing just how far the club had gone in such a short space of time.
The win in Sheffield was followed up by a 2-0 victory over MK Dons in the first round of the League Cup, but the south Bristol side couldn’t keep the winning streak going as they were held to a goalless draw at home against Charlton, though still sit up in fourth in the table due to their favourable goal difference.
Derby, on the other hand haven’t had the desired start from their opening two Championship fixtures, currently sitting in the relegation zone after 3-1 and 5-3 defeats, leaving them having conceded at least three more goals than any other side in the division despite having played just twice.
John Eustace’s side did manage to earn a penalty shoot-out victory over fellow Championship side West Brom in the League Cup last week after scoring a 96th free kick to send the game to spot kicks, but are still yet to find their first points in the league ahead of Friday.
After conceding five goals in their most recent home game against Coventry last week, the Rams will be hoping for a much better performance that will result in their first points of the league campaign.
Two sides on opposite ends of the confidence scale, Bristol City make the trip north in buoyant mood and will back themselves to record a second consecutive victory away from home against a Derby side without a point to their name, a 2-1 away win seeming most likely.
Derby v Bristol City betting tips
Twine to continue to thread the needle
Sorba Thomas is the only Championship player to have more goal contributions than Bristol City’s Scott Twine at this early stage of the season, following his brace and assist in the Robins’ opening day weekend at Sheffield United.
The City playmaker also bagged a brace of assists in City’s 2-0 League Cup win over MK Dons last week, leaving him with five goal contributions in three games so far this season in all competitions.
- Scott Twine to score or assist at 2/1 with Sky Bet
Red Robins to continue bobbing along
Bristol City head into the weekend fourth in the Championship table with four points to their name, including an outstanding 4-1 win at Bramall Lane to open their account, with their style of play largely benefitting a side playing away from home, playing largely on the back foot with quick press.
Derby have lost both of their opening games of the Championship season, conceding eight goals across both games, though only two teams have scored more goals than the Rams after bagging four of their own.
- Bristol City to win and both teams to score at 11/2 with bet365
