Both teams will be looking for their first wins of the season on Friday night after neither team were able to win matches that they went into as favourites.
Chelsea were crowned champions of the world by winning the Club World Cup last month but were unable to open their Premier League campaign with a victory, being held to a goalless draw by Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge.
The fixture list has provided Enzo Maresca’s side with four consecutive London derbies to open their Premier League account for the season, with this Friday’s under the lights being the second in that run.
Many had predicted the Blues to have a strong season this time around, potentially even competing right at the top of the Premier League, particularly following their Club World Cup triumph and having added over £240m of new signings to their squad which finished fourth last season.
West Ham were perhaps on the receiving end of the most disappointing result of the opening weekend of the Premier League as they fell to a 3-0 defeat by a newly promoted Sunderland side.
Graham Potter has come under fire as West Ham manager after only managing a 14th placed finish in the league last season, the club having finished lower only once their promotion to the top flight 12 years ago.
Friday night’s clash, their first in front of their home fans this season in what will be a strong atmosphere against one of the club’s biggest rivals, would be the perfect opportunity for Potter to win back some fans and launch the Hammers up the table following last week’s disappointment.
Potter is winless across seven previous managerial meetings with his former club, while Maresca has won both of his matches against West Ham.
The Blues have won each of the last three meetings between the two sides by a combined scoreline of 10-1, but West Ham have only on three of their 10 visits to the London Stadium, including just one of their last four.
