According to a new book, Prince Philip was quite relieved to see the end of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's wedding in 2018 and didn't shy away from expressing it.

The late royal didn't get to see much of Harry and Meghan while they were dating, but was understood to be "welcoming" to the former "Suits" actress early on before her exit from royal life.

This new revelation about Prince Philip's remark comes after Prince Harry secretly paid tribute to his late grandfather on the 80th anniversary of VJ Day.

Prince Philip was seemingly exasperated over his grandson, Prince Harry's, 2018 wedding to Meghan Markle.

Former royal butler Grant Harrold weighed in on Philip's reaction to the conclusion of the event in his upcoming memoir "The Royal Butler," revealing a searing four-word comment he made.

"Once all the formalities were over, we watched as the happy couple, and then the other members of the Royal Family, filed out of the chapel," Harrold writes in his book, according to an excerpt published by The Telegraph.

He adds, "When Prince Philip came out, he turned to the Queen and said, 'Thank f-ck that's over.'"

Harry and Meghan tied the knot in a lavish ceremony held at St George's Chapel at Windsor Castle, and the event was graced by both grandparents, Queen Elizabeth II, who passed away in 2022, and Prince Philip, who died in 2021.

What Was Prince Harry's Relationship With His Grandfather Like?

Harry's relationship with his late grandfather initially flourished as Philip was understood to admire his sporting abilities both with a gun and a polo pony.

Although he publicly showed support for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, even attending their wedding while recovering from a hip operation, Philip "harbored doubts" about Harry's choice of bride.

Royal biographer Ingrid Seward previously claimed that Philip privately likened Meghan to Wallis Simpson, the Duchess of Windsor, whose relationship with King Edward VIII led to his abdication in 1936.

So when Harry and Meghan relocated to their California home, where they now raise their family, Harry's relationship with his late grandfather was affected because the Duke of Edinburgh was "upset" at him and couldn't understand why he wanted to leave the royal family.

"For Philip, whose entire existence has been based on a devotion to doing his duty, it appeared that his grandson had abdicated his for the sake of his marriage to an American divorcee in much the same way as Edward VIII gave up his crown to marry Wallis Simpson in 1936," Seward writes in her book "Prince Philip Revealed."

Seward also noted in her book that Philip's relationship with Meghan was good initially, but he was greatly dismayed by the former actress and her husband treated the late Queen Elizabeth as they announced their intention to leave the firm before consulting Her Majesty.

In an interview with Vanity Fair at the time, the royal author noted that Harry's behavior was "completely alien to him, so not unnaturally the relationship has suffered."

While Queen Elizabeth was head of state, Philip was notably the head of the family and was known to always put the monarchy first.

He was generally outspoken about his intentions and maintained an iron hand when it came to issues about the firm, so when Harry and Meghan chose to leave, he didn't hesitate to "walk away" from the situation as he felt his advice fell on "deaf ears."

"Philip welcomed Meghan at the beginning; he knows what it's like to be an outsider, and so he's always very supportive of people marrying into the family," Seward added. "He quite liked Meghan at first, but their actions have left a bad taste, and as a consequence, the relationship with Harry has suffered."

Meanwhile, Harry secretly honored Philip at the 80th anniversary of VJ Day last week. According to GB News, he reportedly had a friend lay a wreath of flowers and a letter at the Burma Star Memorial in Staffordshire, England, on August 15.

The delivery reportedly took place after his estranged father, King Charles, stepmom Queen Camilla, and members of the media had left the event, which honored slain veterans of World War II.

The letter, which began with Harry's "H" letterhead, saw him heap praises on the service members of the "Forgotten Army" whose "courage and endurance in the Far East campaign were anything but forgettable."

According to reports, in the Duke of Sussex's letter, he addressed his late grandfather, writing, "For me, this anniversary carries an added layer of meaning. My late grandfather, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, served in the Pacific campaign."

"He spoke with quiet humility about those years, but I know how deeply he respected all who stood beside him in that theatre of war," he continued. "Today, as I think of him, I think also of each of you, of the shared hardships, the bonds forged, and the legacy you leave."

The "Spare" author concluded his letter, writing, "I am humbled by your example, proud of your service and dedication, and profoundly grateful for what you endured. Your story is part of our shared heritage, and it must never be forgotten."
