The opening of the Tennessee Titans’ new home is getting closer and closer.

The new Nissan Stadium is making steady progress as it prepares to welcome the Titans for the 2027 NFL season.

The stadium will be a fully enclosed indoor and multi-purpose venue, with its primary purpose being the home of No. 1 overall pick Cam Ward and the Titans.

The 60,000-seat stadium is projected to cost $2.1 billion, of which $1.26 billion is subsidised public money, the largest public contribution to a stadium in US history

Construction of the stadium began in February 2024 and is being built on the east side of the Cumberland River.

The decision to have a roof is also one of the most notable features, considering it’s non-retractable.

Only two other NFL stadiums boast a similar roof system, the Los Angeles Chargers and Rams’ SoFi Stadium and the Las Vegas RaidersAllegiant Stadium in Las Vegas — which will host the upcoming ‘fight of the century’ between Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford.

The roof also enables the Titans to attract non-football events like wrestling matches and basketball games.

Not to mention year-round music concerts, since the weather no longer matters due to the roof.

Interestingly, the stadium is being built next to the old Nissan Stadium.

What will happen to the Titans’ old stadium?

The current Nissan Stadium was built in 1999 and is an open-air venue with a capacity of 69,143.

Plans were made to renovate the stadium, but were canceled in 2022, with rising costs deeming it impractical.

So after the 2026 NFL season, the stadium, which was first named the Adelphia Coliseum, will be demolished.

Stadium on track to finish ahead of 2027 NFL season

Delays are not uncommon when it comes to large-scale construction programs.

However, Titans CEO and president Burke Nihill confirmed the stadium is on track to finish on schedule.

“It’s completely on track,” he told AZ Sports.

“They laid out a completion date at the end of February 2027. And it’s just kind of been within that one week period the entire time.

“You know, rain storms, all kinds of reasons for delays right? And they’re just completely on track.

“They’re so good at what they do.”

The Titans’ projected $2.1 billion stadium cost could be considered a bargain when comparing it to other new NFL stadiums.

SoFi Stadium, built by Arsenal FC owner Stan Korenke, cost $5.5 billion to build.

The state-of-the-art stadium is considered world-leading and has a capacity of 70,240.

It will also host the Super Bowl in 2027.

Other NFL teams in the process of planning to build new stadiums are the Cleveland Browns and their $2.4 billion project, which is facing roadblocks, and the team with the oldest stadium in the NFL.

Elsewhere, the Kansas City Chiefs are also weighing up a new stadium amid a potential relocation across state lines.
