Judge Frank Caprio has died after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 88.
“Beloved for his compassion, humility and unwavering belief in the goodness of people, Judge Caprio touched the lives of millions through his work in the courtroom and beyond,” read a statement posted to his verified Instagram account on Wednesday, August 20, confirming the unlikely social media star’s death. “His warmth, humor, and kindness left an indelible mark on all who knew him.”
Caprio was known for his show Caught in Providence, which ran between 2018 and 2020 and received multiple Daytime Emmy Award nominations.
He also earned the title of “Nicest Judge in the World” on TikTok, after fans discovered clips of the judge practicing compassion and empathy in his Providence, Rhode Island, courtroom.

“He will be remembered not only as a respected judge, but as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend,” the statement from his official Instagram read. “His legacy lives on in the countless acts of kindness he inspired.”
The statement continued, “In his honor, may we each strive to bring a little more compassion into the world — just as he did every day. #judgefrankcaprio #restinpeace #kindness #compassion #legacy #neverforgotten.”
On Tuesday, August 19, Caprio grabbed the attention of his followers when he posted a video via Instagram from what appeared to be a hospital bed.

At the time, he asked his fans and followers to “pray for me” after experiencing a setback in his health.
“Last year, I asked you to pray for me and it’s very obvious that you did because I came through a very difficult period,” Caprio shared. “Unfortunately, I’ve had a setback and I’m back in the hospital. Now I’m coming to you again asking you to remember me in your prayers once more.”
He added, “I’m a great believer in the power of prayers. I think the almighty above is looking over us. So remember me please.”
Hours later, another post surfaced on his page that read, “Your kindness and encouragement mean the world to him.”
Caprio first revealed his battle with pancreatic cancer in a December 2023 Instagram video.

His diagnosis wouldn’t prevent the judge from sharing feel-good stories from across the county on his social media feed.
He also provided a glimpse into what makes his life full, including handwritten notes in the mail and spending time with rescue animals.
“In every courtroom and in every heart, compassion is the greatest verdict,” Caprio wrote via Instagram five days before his death.
