Pro golfer Ben Griffin pointed to an unlikely catalyst for his poor start during his final round at the BMW Championship over the weekend.

Griffin, 29, found himself six-over par over his first three holes at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Maryland, on Sunday, August 17, which he blamed on swallowing a huge chunk of creatine, a natural source of energy often linked to athletic performance.

“The problem was, I have a tub and I was basically down to the very end, and I just had this rock of creatine that was all built up together,” Griffin told CNN Sports on Monday, August 18. “I’m literally in the locker room chopping it up and putting it in the water, and it’s not really dissolving … because the creatine was all blocked up, I wasn’t really drinking it.”

Griffin continued, “Then I took a swig and it was basically just a couple of blobs, and I just swallowed it. Then … I feel my body start to act a little weird and, honestly, it felt like I had tremors.”

The golfer, currently ranked No. 17 in the world, said he usually takes about 15 mg of creatine daily. On Sunday, he estimated he took that much at one time.

“I hadn’t felt like that on a golf course, never, ever,” Griffin said. “And I just remember putting – then obviously anxiety – like, what’s going on?”

Griffin said he thought about withdrawing from the tournament, but the intense effects of the creatine began wearing off overtime. He also credited his caddie, Alex Ritthamel, with keeping him calm and telling him to drink water.

“I was doing great 10 minutes after, I just had a little period there, where I didn’t really know what was going on,” Griffin explained. “I wasn’t feeling good in the moment, and didn’t execute very well. Then I felt great and went about my day and played really good, and, you know, never gave up.”

Griffin finished his final round with seven birdies, shooting one-under par and finishing in a tie for 12th place.

“I don’t think I’ll be taking too much creatine in the future,” he joked. “I will take it, but not in the amount that I probably did on the golf course, which wasn’t probably a healthy amount.”

Griffin is expected to be good to go when the TOUR Championship tees off from East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Georgia, on Thursday, August 21.
